Key safety tips for those who jog near traffic

Jogging near traffic is sometimes unavoidable. You do not always have time to go to the gym or to a secluded trail in the forest. You may just end up running down the sidewalk or along the side of the road.

As such, you know there is always a risk that you could be struck by a negligent driver. What are some steps you can take to keep yourself safe?

Follow traffic laws

First of all, be sure you know how traffic laws apply to you as a runner. If you are in the road, you are supposed to be moving against traffic, rather than with it. If you are crossing the street, it is always best to use a crosswalk, especially one that is lighted and offers you more visibility.

Avoid distractions

Another thing that can help is to run in silence, rather than listening to music on your headphones. It is also best to stay off of your phone, so do not check your notifications while you are running. Any distraction takes your attention away from the traffic around you.

Focus on visibility

Finally, you may want to consider wearing bright clothes that make you more visible during the day. This is especially important if you are going to be running very early in the day or late into the evening. It can be wise to wear a headlamp, a lighted vest, reflective material or something else that helps you stand out in these low-light conditions.

Even if you take all these steps to stay safe, you could still be injured by a negligent driver. If you are, you may deserve compensation for medical bills and more.
