Are there more car accidents in the summer?

Summer weather has finally arrived. Vacations, road trips, family reunions and celebrations give everyone something to look forward to.

However, it’s also one of the most accident-prone times of the year when everyone takes to the road.

100 Deadly Days

The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is considered a dangerous time for teen drivers. To the point that it has been nicknamed the “100 Deadliest Days.”  During that time, the average number of fatal crashes involving teen drivers increases by 15% compared to the rest of the year.

Several factors contribute to this statistic, including:

  • Teen drivers are less experienced.
  • They are also more prone to engaging in risky behaviors, such as speeding or distracted driving.
  • Summer gives them more free time and more opportunities to drive.

But teen drivers aren’t the only reason why there are more accidents during those 100 days. Summer is a busy time with holidays such as Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day. These days are often marked by cookouts and alcohol consumption. Almost 30% of the fatal vehicle accidents in New York State involve drunk drivers.

There’s a reason why people joke that the traffic cone is New York’s state flower. Summer is the season for road construction. Narrow traffic lanes, sudden stops and detours during a time when there are more vehicles on the road contribute to the increased likelihood of accidents.

Another factor in the increased number of accidents is driver fatigue. Long road trips and hot weather can easily tire the driver. Slower reaction times, microsleeps and inattention create ideal conditions for accidents.

There are steps you can take to keep you and others safe on the road:

  • Have a designated driver if you plan to drink.
  • Set specific rules for your teen driver, such as limiting nighttime driving and the number of passengers they can have.
  • Inspect your vehicle before heading out, especially in hot weather and before long trips.
  • Take breaks and stay hydrated during long drives to avoid fatigue and maintain your focus.

If you are involved in a car accident this summer, speak with someone who can review the details and help you receive compensation.
