Dangers of driving near tanker trucks

Drivers on interstates and city streets have likely seen various types of semitrucks. One of these is the tanker truck, which is used to carry a variety of liquids. These vehicles often require the truckers operating them to have special training, partially based on what type of cargo they’re carrying.

There are specific hazards that make tanker trucks dangerous to drive. There’s also an increased risk of danger for any drivers near these vehicles. There are a few factors to consider beyond the basic need to stay out of the trucker’s blind spots.

Hazardous cargo is possible

Tanker trucks often carry dangerous materials such as gasoline, chemicals or other flammable liquids. In the event of a collision, these substances can pose serious health and safety risks. Fires, explosions or toxic exposure are real possibilities when hazardous materials are involved. Residue can remain in an empty tank and still pose danger.

Limited maneuverability

Tanker trucks are heavy, long and slow to stop. They require significantly more time and distance to react to sudden changes in traffic. Quick lane changes, abrupt stops or cutting in front of a tanker can easily result in a rear-end collision.

Tanker trucks are prone to rollovers, especially when the liquid inside shifts during turns or abrupt maneuvers. This sloshing effect, known as liquid surge, makes it harder for the driver to maintain control.

Anyone who’s involved in a crash with a tanker truck is at risk of suffering serious injuries. These can be costly for the victims, so it’s critical for the victims to consider seeking compensation. Working with someone who understands these matters may be beneficial during this process.
