Motorcyclists need to be aware of the risks they face from other drivers on the road. When these drivers make mistakes, there is a very high chance that the motorcyclist will be the one who suffers the greater share of the injuries. In fact, motorcycle crashes are much more likely to lead to fatalities than other kinds of accidents.
One of the most dangerous crashes is known as a left-turn accident. This can happen at an intersection, such as a four-way stop, when another car turns left in front of a motorcycle that is proceeding straight through the intersection. But it can also happen on a two-lane road, such as when a driver is trying to turn left to pull into a driveway or a parking lot. They have to cross the oncoming traffic lanes to do so.
A difficult accident to avoid
When that other driver turns in front of a motorcycle, it’s very hard for the motorcyclist to avoid a crash. They don’t have enough time to stop, even if they hit the brakes. Laying the bike down isn’t more effective, and just reduces their control. Plus, if they try to swerve around the vehicle, they risk running into the oncoming traffic lanes.
Often, drivers make this mistake and turn in front of motorcycles just because they don’t see them. Some drivers are distracted, but many are just paying more attention to larger vehicles. A motorcycle could be hidden in the gap between two trucks, for example, and a driver may try to turn left through that gap – not realizing it is occupied until the crash occurs.
