While many opt to drive around the city, others choose alternative methods. Whether it’s to stay fit, protect the environment, or simply avoid rush hour, walking is the number one choice for countless people.

Although walking comes with several benefits, there are also downsides. Simply put, walkers do not have the same levels of physical protection as cars, trucks, buses or even cyclists. This means that they are exposed to severe injuries when caught up in accidents. Recognizing some of the most common factors in pedestrian accidents could help to make journeys safer for everyone.

Exiting public transport

It is not always practicable to complete all journeys on foot, so some pedestrians also utilize public transport. Buses tend to provide access to key parts of the city, where cars are also present. Buses constantly have to offload passengers, which means coming to a stop. If a driver is on a tight deadline, it can be infuriating to be stuck behind another vehicle for long periods of time. Their initial instinct might be to overtake and move around what in their mind is simply an obstacle. However, if a bus is stationary, this almost guarantees that there are people around. They could be crossing the road after departing the bus at the very moment that a car decides to overtake. This is an extremely dangerous scenario and many pedestrians are injured this way every year.

Lack of visibility poses a real threat

Pedestrians are smaller in stature than vehicles on the road. This makes them especially difficult for road users to see, especially at nighttime or in dense traffic. If a driver’s view is impaired, pedestrians can appear seemingly in an instant, giving the road user little time to react.

Walking is a rewarding way to get around. It can be efficient as well as allow you to take in the city sights. Nonetheless, it is vital to keep yourself protected. If you have been caught up in an accident, understand that you have legal rights.
